Holy Island
Holy Island is connected to the mainland by a low-lying tidal causeway with a wide panorama of dunes inland and to the north. On the southern shore are the ruins of the Priory and Lindisfarne Castle sits earnestly on an outcrop beyond. Extensive habitats of mud flats shallows and sand lie around the island.
Crossing to Lindisfarne
Lindisfarne, the Anglo-Saxon name is used by it’s 650 local residents. This number swells to over half a million in the tourist months. A low-lying causeway connects Lindisfarne to the mainland. Being tidal, the crossing may only be safely made at certain times. Please be sure to check the safe crossing times to Holy Island when you wish to travel.
A magical day out
There is much to discover on the magical and ancient island of Lindisfarne, more than can easily be done in a day. It is home to the Lindisfarne Abbey, originally dating from 640 AD. There is a Priory and also a Medieval Castle. Local artefacts dating from medieval times may be seen on Holy Island as well as more modern history such as the 19th Century Lime Kilns.
Holy Island is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts, photographers and hikers alike. There is a shop, a post office, three pubs and a hotel to support both the local and the tourist population.
